Last Monday evening Mrs. Matthews entertained a number of young people at euchre, and a right merry time they all had. Mrs. John Avery gave a moat enjoyable bridge and euchre party last Thursday evening in honor of Mrs. Foote, of Auckland. The prizes were won by Mrs. Percy Webster, Mrs. Foote, Mrs. J. Dainty afternoon tea was served in the diningroom. Miss Lucy Skinner won the "observation competition," and for the best impromptu-composed limerick; Miss Matthews came second. Mrs. Fookes received her guests in a pretty pale blue silk voile, with cream lace vest and sleeves. Miss X. Capel wore pale pink ninon, black hat, lined with pink; Miss S. On Thursday last, at Mrs. Walter Bayley's, an afternoon tea was given to memI bers of the Hunt Club. I A surprise party was taken to Mrs. I Chaney's last night (Friday), which took the form of cards and dancing. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Wright and family leave New Plymouth on Monday for their future home at Mirando (Piako district), Mr. Wright having taken up land on account of his health. Miss K. Millan (Auckland) is the guest of Mrs. Bell Thomson, \ T ew Plymouth. Mrs. Anderson (England) is on a short visit to her sister. Mrs. T. K. Morrison. Mrs. Cummings is visiting her mother, Mrs. Theophilus White. Miss D. Bedford returns home by the s.s. Rarawa on Monday.
THE HAWERA RACES.
There was n good attendance on the ■first day of the Hawera races. The weather was not all that could be desired. The wind blew cold the whole of the day, marring the enjoyment of many. There were some neat costumes worn by the ladies, all of whom, T noticed, favored the smart narrow tailored skirts. Among those present were Mrs. Page. (Wellington), who wore a smart costume of green cloth, finished with black buttons and wide black silk braid, toque en suite; Mrs. Cardale (Stratford). smart navy costume, black velvet toque, with brown feather boa; Mrs. Evans (Wellington) navy costume, fox furs; Mrs. (Dr) Paget (Stratford), stylish Empire gown of peacock blue cloth, beautifully braided with narrow black silk braid; Mrs. (Dr.) Harrison (Eltham), stylish navy costume, large black hat; Mrs. Turner (Patea). black costume; Miss Crawshaw (Sydney), grey cheek tweed costume; Miss' Carey, navy costume, black velvet hat, with large white wing; Mrs. .Jury, dark tweed costume, smart violet hat; Mrs. Burgess, dark brown Harris tweed costume, black liat; Mrs. T. C. Gormley, navy costume, smart toque, white fox furs. STRATFORD NOTES Mrs. Cardale has returned from Hawera. +, ? Mrs. I*isher. of Wellington, who has been on a visit to her sister, Mrs. Birss l e turned to Wellington on Wednesday The Cirls' Peace Scouts' concert bal-ance-sheet is complete/and there is a substantial balance of £ll to their credit. Many thanks are due to Mesdames K. C. liobiuson, Vmacke. .Johnston and Carberrv, who so kimllv assisted at the function. The Boy Scouts' concert , held in the Town Hall on Monday night, was a huge! success, and Scoutmaster Bird must feel well satisfied with the excellent results. Dr. Stevens instructed the Girl Peace'
Scouts in first aid to the injured yesterday afternoon. The lecture was most Interesting, and the doctor has promised to lecture again next Thursday afternoon. Mi 63 Smith, of Stratford, has joined the teaching staff of the lnglewood district school.
