Tenders received by the Defence Department for ISOO sets of military harness average £2 per set over last year's, or £5 over English tenders. The Act-ing-Minister for Defence says he desires to assist local industries, but he would not b» doing his duty if he allowed manufacturers to insist on such an advance. SYDNEY'S TELEPHONES. Received 18, 12.5 a.m. Svdney, Mav 17. The Postmaster-General has decided to conduct svstomatic tests in connection with the telephone service. An officer will devote his time going round ringing numbers on different telephones and report the results.
