THE DEFENCE SCHEME
THE SUGGESTED CHURCH CORPS.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. Colonel Wolfe, officer commanding the Auckland district, interviewed on the subject of allowing Roman Catholics or other denominations to form separate companies under the new defence scheme, said there was no provision in the regulations for carrying this idea into effect, but it had the approval of the Commandant of the New Zealand Forces. As far as he understood the position, the arrangement was only to apply to cadet corps of lads of 14 to 18 years, not to territorials. The idea was to allow any denomination to form separate cadet coops from their own number, provided thert were enough boys therein to constitute a company. He emphasised that such corps will be free from any suspicion of sectarianism. One feature that recommended such an arrangement was the force it gave in the matter of enrolment. He did not see how the same plan could work with the territorials. MAJOR-GENERAL AT WANGANUI. Wanganui, Last Night. General Godley inspected the local battalion on .Saturday afternoon. There was a good muster of all ranks and the General expressed his pleasure at the behaviour of the men. General Godley was afterwards tendered a civic reception, and in replying to a speech of welcome, gave much interesting information relative to the military scheme.
