KING AND QUEEN ATTEND THE OPENING. NEW ZEALAND LADIES IN MAORI MATS. By cable.—Press Association—Copyright London, May 12. Tie Festival of Empire opened in fine weather. The King and Queen, the Prince of Wales, and Princess Mary drove to the Crystal Palace, 100,000 school children and Boy Scouts lining the route. Their Majesties had an enthusiastic reception. They stopped to listen to 20,000 children at Southwark singing the National Anthem. Many triumphal arches were erected, and several mayors of borough councils presented addresses. The Duke and Duchess of Fife, the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, and the Duke and Duchess of Teck joined their Majesties at the Crystal Palace, where Lord Plymouth received them. A concert followed, at which Madame Clara Butt and the Harris Choir of 4500 voices rendered patriotic songs, includini Kipling's Recessional. Their Majesties afterwards reviewed the pageant in costume, a number of Australians and New Zealanders taking part, including Miss Ward, as a Maori princess, Miss Rubi Seddon and Mrs. Hislop, in Maori costume. Their Majesties then inspected the model Imperial Parliament Houses and the All Red tour, including Canada's £70,000 exhibit and fair.

There were over 100,000 people present in the palace grounds. The King and Queen afterwards attended the dominions' reception, whereat 30,000 were present, including Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, Sir George and Lady Reid, Sir William and Lady Hall-Jones, the Agents-General and their wives, Lord Roberts, the Ambassadors, several Cabinet Ministers, and many members of the House of Commons.

OUR PREMIER TAKES TEA WITH THE KING. London, May 12. The Sovereigns, after the concert, invited Sir Joseph and Lady Ward to tea. King George expressed to Sir Joseph Ward his appreciation of New Zealand's wreath at Windsor. A BIG ATTENDANCE. Received 14, 5.5 p.m. London, May 13. Yesterday's spectators at the Festival of Empire were 144,234.
