WAITARA HARBOR BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. j The first monthly meeting of the v>aitara Harbor Board, as constituted under the new Harbor Boards Act, was held at Waltara yesterday, when there were present: Messrs W..F.Jenkins (chairman), Wm. Birdling, R. T. Hicks, Jas. Hinc, and J. H. Smith. BEACH METAL. The Borough Council acked for permission to take metal from the beach. Mr. Cameron pointed out that a previous resolution gave the Borough Council permission to take metal from above, the bridge without royalty. Mr. Hinc objected to any further concession, as stone was a valuable asset in Taranaki. The Harbor Board were merely trustees for the district, and had no right to divert an asset that belonged to the whole district to any particular portion. The time might come when they would appeal to the country for assistance, and they would perhaps be told that the Board had already given away its assets. The chairman said there was plenty of stone available. The Borough Council was always willing to assist the Board, and they should reciprocate. The Borough Council would only require 400 or 500 yards, possible none at all. Mr. Hine objected to the principle. If they granted a little to one local bodyothers would want more. , Mr. Smith said they might give away something to-day that they would want to-morrow. Mr. Birdling said metal came down every flood. The Board- should be prepared to give and take a little. The matter then dropped. COMMITTEES. The whole Board was appointed a works committee, with a quorum of three. The committee will meet on the morning of the ordinary monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Messrs Birdling, Rattenbury and the chairman were appointed a valuation committee. GENERAL. The District Engineer of Railways wrote that he would definitely advise the Board in a few days regarding the extension of rails on the wharf. Messrs Wm. Bannatyne and Co., of Wellington, were granted permission to erect a powder magazine, on a site to be fixed by the Board, at a rental of £5 per annum. The question of depositing silt from the dredge was brought up, and it was resolved that it be deposited on the north side in future. Lessees in arrears with rent are to be notified that unless the arrears are paid up within a month the accounts will be placed in the hands of the Board's solicitor. In reply to questions as to whether anything definite had been heard of the missing timber at the wharf, the secretary stated that the District Traffic Manager had been in Waitara, and seemed favorably disposed to meet the Board's request that the loss should be made good. It was pointed out that the contractors were grumbling at the inconvenience caused them by the delay. The secretary said that the Railway Department and other local bodies also complained of the delay in securing Australian hardwood. It was really necessary to order timber twelve or eighteen months before required. Mr. (',. H. Stubbs surrendered his old lease and a new lease was granted him. A suh-leasc from Mr. John Andrews to Mr. Evan Jones was also approved. A new lease was granted to Mr. J. W. McDuff on his surrendering his old lease. Mr. W. Y. Newbery was granted a renewal of a lease of a section (which the arbitrators valued at £00) for 21 years. Mr. 11. Chappie, one of the retiring members of the Board, sent a letter of thanks to the Board for their motion of appreciation of the retiring members' services passed at last meeting. After ii good deal of discussion concerning the working of the dredge and the alleged friction between members of the dredge crew, the Board decided to have the dredging at Hatrick's wharf completed.
