Mr. and Mrs. A. Mcintosh and family were passengers per s.s. Rarawa last night for Auckland. Mr. E. V. Wilson, formerly a member of Mr. Fraser's staff at New Plymouth, and now of Wanganui, has passed his liiml examination as a chemist. Mr. .1. K. Pa ton, at present on Mr. Fraser's staff, has also passed his final examination, and Mr. L. 15. Stohr, of Messrs Teed and t'o.'s staff, has passed his first examination.
An old soldier of the Maori war passed away at the Veterans' Home, Auckland, oil Tuesday evening, in Mr. Samuel Goodman, who arrived with a detachment of his regiment, the 05th, in 1855, and saw active service in Taranaki during the war, for which he received the New Zealand war medal and two good conduct badges. Some time ago Mr. \V. D. Powdrell, of Hawcra, received the distressing intelligence of the death of his brother, Mr. Harry Powdrell, which was said to have occurred in one of the remote parts or South Africa. Mr. Powdrell this week received the still further shocking news that Harry had been wilfully shot from behind by n Russian Pole. Mr. Harry Powdrell at the time had a sum of £250 in his belt, and probably was murdered for this.—Star.
General Sir Charles Burnett, who with Lady Burnett, is on his way to New Zealand, was born in Sydney sixty-eight years ago, but passed most of big childhood at St. Kilda, Melbourne. He has spent forty )«)ars in the army. He fought in Ashanti, took part in the defence of Kandahar, and was present at the bombardment of Alexandria. He was appointed in 1880 assistant ad-jutant-general at Aldcrshot. General Burnett was military attache with the Japanese army in the Russo-Japanese war, and before his retirement he was in charge of the Western command of Great Britain. The General and hia wife left Sydney on Wednesday by the Victoria, due at Auckland on Sunday. General Burnett comes to New Zealand to visit a brother.
