'. A VARIED LIST. A varied list of cases was dealt with at the Magistrate's court yesterday morning, before Mr. 11. S. Fitzherbert, t S.M. BREACHES OF PROHIBITION ORDERS. William Hart was charged with having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. He pleaded guilty, and was lined 10s and costs 7s; in default, 48 hours' imprisonment. Thomas Judge was charged with having' supplied Wm. Hart with liquor, knowing that Hart was a prohibited person. Mr. Grey appeared for accused, who pleaded guilty. Mr. Grey, in extenuation of the offence, stated that accused had purchased a bottle of beer for his own use, but, becoming the worse for liquor, allowed Hart to obtain possession of it. —A fine of 10s and costs 7s

was imposed; in default, 48 hours' imprisonment. A fortnight was allowed for payment of the fine. CYCLING WITHOUT LIGHTS. Geoffrey Whitcombe and Edward Jeffries each pleaded guilty to charges of riding bicycles along Devon Street, Fitzroy, between the lioUrb of sunset and sunrise, without lights on'the evening of April 29th. Sergt. Dart stated that it was some time now sinde similar cases had been taften up ,ip the Fitzroy Town District. As these 1 casfes would act as , a warning, lte.only asked for a nominal penalty.—Fines, iff? 2s jG(J with costs 7s were imposed. A DIRTY CHIMNEY. "I don't know if I should hear this case. I am a member of the club, and am, therefore, possibly an interested person," remarked his Worship, when L. M. Monteath, secretary of the Taranaki ,CJub, was charged by Inspector Tippins with a breach of the borough bye-laws on account of a chimney at th 6 club liiiVing caught fire." Ho\vever, as both parties were agreeable, the case proceeded. Mr. Monteath pleaded guilty, and stated that the club's chimneys were constantly swept, but this year the matter had been neglected owing to the absence of the chief steward. In reply to his Worship, defendant stated that no blame was actually attachable to him, as the chimney did not come directly under his supervision.—A'fine of 5s and costs 7s was imposed.
