CANNIBALS BEATEN OFF.

A DERPEKATE DEFENCE. By cable.—Press Association.—Copyright New York, May 8. The British steamer Kaisenga struck a reef oil' Woniazi Island, German East Africa, and was attacked by a thousand cannibals, who were repulsed by broadsides of steam and scalding water. THE STORY DISCREDITED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Referring to the cable that the steamer Kasenga when on a reef was attacked by canibals in German West Africa, Mr. C. H. Mason, of Timaru, is a correspondent of Mr. Brooking, au exTimaruvian, the third engineer of the vessel. In his last letter from East London, when bound for New York, he stated that the ship had been aground for some hours on a sand-bank. This is probably the whole basis of the New York story.
