CARGO-BROACHING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Two seamen on the s.s., Rakaia, cnarge(l with broaching cargo at Port Chalmers about April 29, and stealing four gallons of whisky and a case of bottled beer (ship's stores"), were convicted and each ordered to forfeit £4 10s, half-cost of the stolen liquor, and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. WRESTLING CHAMPIONS MEET. Timaru, Last Night. A wrestling match has been arranged here, between J. Riddiok, New Zealand champion, and A. Rain, British champion, for Friday. Bain undertakes to gain three falls within an hour's wrestling, catch-ascatch-can style. STRIKE OF LABORERS. Hastings, Lust Night. Sixty men employed on sewer excavations struck work this afternoon. The work was being done on the piece-work system, but the Borough Council resolved to have the balance done by day labor, the rate of pay to be Os for men in the trench and 8s for surfacemen. When informed of the decision, the workers put on their coats and refused to resume unless reinstated on the piecework system or paid at the rate of 10s a day for the trench and !>s for the surface.
ARREST OF SUSPECTS. Auckland. Last Night. It has not yet linen decided what, steps are to follow the arrest of the two suspects of the Kolin (Auckland) burglary iu Kan Francisco. ATr. F. Diddams. manager of the estate of A. Kohn, stated to-day that in the event of the estate having to provide the money required for the return of the arrested persons, there is every likelihood of the action being gone on with in order to recover the jewellery. Nothing will be done, however, until further information is obtained, so as to ensure no mistake being made in regard to the right persons being in custody. Tn regard to the arrest itself, information is scarce, but Mr. Diddams is of opinion that the arrests must, have been as the result of Customs examination in America. The goods stolen were of such bulk that thev could not have been concealed about the person.
COMPULSORY OONTTNTATION CLASSES. Wanganui, Last Night. The Wanganui School Committee this evening approved of the provisions of the Education Act Amendment of last session regarding compulsory attendance at continuation classes. The committee recommended that liberal provisions be made for exemptions, so that the Technical College Committee will have full latitude to deal with exceptional eases. It also recommended that if at all possible arrangements he made for holding classes for gii-la in the afternoons.
