Lily Boltwood, a servant, aged 18, at Chestnut, was severely burned while rescuing from a burning bed two children and their nurse, the latter having fainted. BRITISH TRADE FOR APRIL. London, May 7. Imports for April decreased by£7,705,244, mainly owing to the decrease in grain, flour, cotton, wool and silk. Exports increased by £400,211, and re-ex-ports decreased by £2,969,843. THE HOUNDSDITCH MURDERS. London, May 7. In the Houndsditch case the police admitted that Gardstein on November 19 signed as Mourin a receipt for £3l paid in pursuance of a telegram from Russia. Counsel for the defence criticised the police for withholding the fact until now. The superintendent replied that he did not consider the matter material.

Investigation of the loss of the police patrol leads to the supposition that the men were poisoned by Indians.
