THE FEDERAL REFERENDA

REFERENCE BY MR. ASQUITH. By cable.—Press Association.—Copyright , London, May 7. Mr. Asquith, in his speech at Manchester, referred incidentally to the result of the Australian referenda. He disclaimed making controversial reference to the Commonwealth's internal; affairs. He did not pretend to say what effects the decisive majorities on the referenda might have on Australia, but he asked whether, if the like situation had occurred in England, such a rebuff would not have seriously damaged the prestige and . authority of any Government in upholding the legislative and administrative system which had been developed and perfected here on a basis of the general lines of policy the country desires its representatives to pursue. MR. FISHER HOPEFUL. ELECTORS WILL APPROVE IX 1913. Received 9,, 12.40 a.m. London, May 8. The Daily Chronicle's Home correspondent reports that Mr. Fisher was interviewed there regarding the referenda. He said he was confident that the Bill would be approved at the }913 election. The people's will must eventually triumph over all obstacles.
