CORRESPONDENCE

CONTINUOUS TELEPHONY. To the Editor. Sir,—l think it is quite unnecessary for you to remind or advise inc as to what paper I should address. Your paper, I take it, is a medium for information to your readers, and it is they and they only who have the sole right to be in sympathy with any object or movement which may appear in your columns. Your sympathy was not even hinted for, and as for your remarks as to my views being "unkind and uncalled for," they prove conclusively that you are quite antagonistic to my objections. Matters of this kind are never discussed by any representative of a journal. The readers pay the privilege for this by supporting your paper. Consequently, I look upon your remarks as a complete error of judgment or a disordered liver. Kindly publish this.—

I am, etc., J. F. BURKE. [We are duly thankful to our correspondent for laying down the law governing the conduct of this paper and its obligations to the public, but desire to point out to him that there are certain rules we can hardly depart from, even in the case of a person of his eminence. One is that we don't puolish letters criticising letters or articles appearing in our contemporary; another is that we don't insert libellous and abusive letters. J. F. B's letter contravened these rules in an uncommon degree. In fact, it was one of the most amazing missives that have come before us. Hence its treatment. We would also point out that we don't object to printing Jetterß on any subject, whether at variance with our views or not, so long as the aforementioned rules are observed; indeed we welcome expressions of opinion from our readers.—Ed.]
