FIRES.

MAN PERISHES IN THE FLAMES. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Dupedin, Saturday. The house of XV, Neylon, of Arrowtown, was totally destroyed by Are early this morning. Xeylon perished in the flames, and his wife and family had a narrow escape, one daughter being slightly burned. The remains of the unfortunate man was charred beyond recognition.

A LOCAL OUTBREAK. A Are occurred in King-street yesterday afternoon, when a building alongside the residence of Miss Simpson, and owned by that lady, but occupied by her cousin, Miss Jackson, as a dressmaking establishment, was completely gutted. At about 1.15 p.m. Miss Jackson went into the workroom and placed a pot of water on a gas-ring. She then left the room, and on returning live minutes later found it enveloped in flames, the gas evidently having ignited at the joint where the tube was attached to the wall. Miss Jackson at once ran to Jury's stables, and gave the alarm. The Fire Brigade was promptly on the scene, and soon had the Are under control, but not before Miss Jackson had lost all her dressmaking appliances, which were valued at £25 and were uninsured. Constable O'Neill, who was the first on the scene, pulled the sewing machine through the window, but it was considerably damaged by the fire, and will be useless. The amount of insurance on the building was not ascertainable last night. FITZROY HOUSE BURNED.

At 2.50 on Friday morning a six-room-ed house, owned and occupied by Mr. Wm. Rowe, of Glennvon, near Waiwa- / kaiho, was burned to the ground, nothing being saved. Mr. Rowe just escaped out of a liack window as the flames broke into the room. Amongst other things burned were £l2 10s in cash and a new bicycle. The insurance on the house was .€250, and £75 on the furniture, both in the Ocean Fire Insurance Co. OUTBREAK AT WAIONGONA. A four-roomed cottage alongside the railway line near Waiongona, owned and " occupied by a plate-layer, Mr. Knofflock was totally destroyed by fire on Friday evening.
