A Press cablegram from London states that Captain Burnett Hitchcock, of the Royal Fusiliers, has been selected for duty in New Zealand. Mr. G. M. Thomson. M.l\. Dunedin North, is on a visit to Hawera, and may stay for several weeks. He is staying with his son, Dr. Thomson. A London cablegram states that Madame Melba has arrived in London, and opens in the La Boheme on Wednesday. She sails for Australia on July 13. ''

The Works Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council, recommends that Councillor G. W. Browne be appointed deputy-Mayor for the ensuing year.

Sir Robert Stout, accompanied by one of the other members of the Prison! Board, was in New Plymouth yesterday and paid a visit to the local prison and reformatory.

Plunket Nurse Morgan arrived from Dunedin by Saturday night's mail train, to take up the duties here. She is the guest of Mr. Whittle, of the Red House Hotel, and her services are now at the disposal of all those requiring her help,, and assistance.

On Saturday night, Sergeant Dart, re turned from Wellington, where he has ' been initiating his successor, Sergeant Kelly, into his duties as instructor of the training depot. Sergeant Cullen,, who has been relieving here, returns to Stratford this morning. Robert Wardrop, a prominent resident of Motueka for many years, and for several years a member of the harbor board there, died in a private hospital in Wellington on Saturday night Hie underwent an operation last Tuesday, from which he failed to rally. Deceased was 50 years of age.—Press Association. Mr. Mitchell, of Palmerston North,, who is to. take Mr. P. G. Amadeo's plaee on the Magistrate's Court staff at New Plymouth (Mr. Amadeo having resigned from the service), is relieving the clerk of the court at Taihapc, who is seriously ill. Mr. B. L. Hammond, of Nelson, is therefore temporarily filling Mr. Mitchell's place at New Plymouth. Mr. W. Pepper, who is retiring on superannuation after 28 years' service,, was entertained by a large number of railway men at Wanganui on Saturday night, and presented with a substantial purse of sovereigns.—Press Association. The Hon. J. Carroll received a cablegram on Saturday from Sir Joseph Ward stating that on behalf of the. people of New Zealand ho laid a wreath on the tomb of His Majesty King Edward VII. A London cable states that Lady Ward accompanied the Premier, and that the wreath was inscribed: "In loving memory of the universally beloved Peacemaker of the AVorld, the late lamented sovereign King Edward, from the people of New Zealand."—Press Association.
