CORRESPONDENCE
TARANAKI'S HARBOR.
To the Editor. Sir,—The very encouraging reports from month to month of the splendid progress being made with the dredging and other harbor improvement* should put new life and vigor into the breast of every citizen and settler.] None of us yet realises what it means to the province, for us to be able to stand on shore and see the great ocean liners steam up tojthe wharf laden with every necessary article for use or ornament that we cannot manufacture in New Zealand, or appreciate the fact that every such article will 'be cheapened on reaching the consumer, and that every marketable article we can produce will then be put on board those great ships for use in other lands at considerably more profit to the producers. The information put forth by our worthy citizen the chairman of the] Harbor Board that the big ships will be able to come alongside in fifteen months should prepare every merchant and importer in this province for indenting every item of merchandise per direct steamer to New Plymouth the moment the port is ready. As many of us indent direct from the manufacturers and place our orders eight, nine, and often ten months before the goods are needed to arrive here, there is no time to waste, and we must get in touch and keep in touch with the chairman of the Harbor Board and watch the progress of the work, so ns to be able to instruct English manufacturers by letter or by cable t to ship everything straight to our port: The only short interval will be the next few weeks. The matter of urgent importance to us all during that short interval k the winter show. In three weeks the entries close; in live weeks it will be all over. Let everyone do their "little bit" and do it now.—l am, etc., W. AMBURY.
