FOOTBALL

The football season opens on Thursday next. Tlie following fixtures have been | arranged for that date: — Seniors.—Tukapa v. Eltham, at New Plymouth, at 2 p.m.; Clifton v. Stratford, at Waitara, at 2 p.m.; Inglewood a bye. Juniors.—Eltham v. Tukapa, at Eltham, at 3 p.m.; Inglewood v. Star, at Inglewood, at 3 p.m.; Stratford v. Clifton, at Stratford, at 3 p.m. Second Juniors.—Tukapa v. Eltham, at New Plymouth, at 1.30 p.m.; Clifton v. Stratford, at Waitara, at 12.30 p.m.; Star v. Inglewood, at New Plymouth, at 3 p.m. "Dick" McGregor, the retired New Zealand representative centre three-quarter, was married in Auckland recently. A better centre three-quarter (says the Referee) New Zealand never sent on tour to Australia than the Aucklander, who had the brain as well as the eye to see in football movements, attacking or defensive. Football will open in real earnest on Thursday next, when the northern division matches will commence. Most of the teams have already felt their feet, Tukapa having played a friendly draw with Clifton, and Stratford seniors having been defeated by Eltham by 0 points to 3. Inglewood also played an interesting seven-a-side tournament, over 40 players competing. The matches fixed to open the season should provide good football. Stratford ! will meet Clifton at Waitara, Last I year's division winners do not appear as strong as last season, whereas the runncrs-up have improved their teanti and should about win. Tukapa and Eltham meet at New Plymouth. The issue of this is very open. "Simon Mynott" was on the line for Tukapa last Friday. Will he be able to keep there all the season? Time will tell. Inglewood will have a team of young players. They have the bye on Thursday. This should give them a chance| to pull their team together. Inglewood certainly deserve a smile from Dame Fortune, and everyone would be pleased to see them near the top once again. The amalgamation of the Referees' Associations should prove of great advantage. It is understood that there will be siis«|eut- referees available for both Thursday and Saturday matches. Footballers should remember that these gentlemen put in a lot of time in the interests of the game, not only on the field, but also in studying rules, etc. It is therefore "up to" the players to be generous, and if defeated not to blame the referee, but blame themselves, or, at any ra,te, give some praise to their opponents. The Referees' Association intends to be strict in enforcing the rule tnat plnv ers shall appear in their proper colors. They have had quite enough of variegated colors. No doubt this variegation gives tlie field a kaleidoscopic appearance (some people say "motley"), but it > does not make the referees' duty any' easier. I The Saturday fixtures appear in this) issue, subject, of course, to revision by s the Taranaki Rugbv Union. Stars meet j Rovers in New Plymouth. The " j team will tie much on the same lines as last year's.. .They are, however, short'of a good half-back. ■ Rovers alßo should be fairly strong.. Tariki are an unknown quantity, but they should be capable of making a good stand. Okato will have good forwards, but their backs may be rather weak for a start. Their for-1 ward have pulled them through before, and may be confidently expected to uphold their end of the game this season. United are a, new team, and comprise a lot of young-.players, leavened with a few more seasoned ones. They have the right spirit. They: have expressed determination "to see the-contest throujh, even if defeated. . They should in a season or two prove 6 formidable combination. • . 'i . , The weather , was all that could be desired for the seven-a-side tournament at Inglewood' on-'Thursday. A most interesting series/of-(matches resulted. In the first round, Kaim&ta: and Inglewood A met, Inglewood winning by 12 points to 6. Next the: B taam- suffered defeat at the hands oi. tht C team' by 9 points to C. The final resulted in a win for the A team by tb»«e points to nil. I shall be pleased at all time to publish any information, of interest to footballers generally. 'Secretaries of clubs will oblige by foi;war4jng. names of competing teams, etc'.,' as'soon as selected. • j, ; -, -j-™-, INTERNATIONAL ;€tf AMPIONSHI F, ; i; ' -Wift-Hl ' ■ ifr; ; j*.i .-ft 'For Agj.
