Glenfern has broken it for a win. The hurdler Celtic broke down on Wednesday. Lethean is expected to show up well iii stick events this winter. , Weights for the Egmont meeting will furnish "pickers" with brain exercise today., Seaweed is in work again at Awapuni and is said to be galloping ■well. The Hawke's Bay J.C. autumn meeting opens on Wednesday next. Miss Explosion, winner of the Maiden Hurdles at Avondale, is spoken of as a real good sort. Aberbrothock has broken down again and will now be permanently retired to the stud. Handicapper Geo. Morse should declare weights for the Wanganui Steeplechase and Century Hurdles to-day. The veteran 'chaser Corazon is getting through another sound preparation, and should do well against the weak class engaged in big-country events this season. The stewards of the Auckland Racina Club met last week when the jockey, C. Brown, was fined £5 for not fulfilling an engagement to ride Gloy in the Tourist Handicap at the recent A.R.C. meeting. As generally expected, Gunboat won the Marlborough Cup, but he just got his head in front in the final pinch and had to run 2.8 to beat the opposition. Antarctic has made a good recovery from his recent accident, and is now eallopiflg strongly at Ellerslie. All gpine well the northern 'chaser will sport silk at Wanganui. T|he pony Red Lupin had heaps of friends each day at Blenheim and ran well.. In the Flying he was just beaten for second money in the last few strides, and in the Telegraph Handicap he filled the role of Tunner-up to Glenspring. , Mighty Atom's dual victory at Avondale shows that over a short course a pony can hold his own with ordinary handicap horses. Jack Seaton was another of the lilliputians to score at the meeting. These "little horses" are wonderfully alert at the barrier and don't give away anything at the sharp turnstwo big arguments in their favor. A great string of jumpers is now located at Awapuni, anjl interesting work is served up there every morning. With Te Arai, Defeat, Don Carlos, Rosegrove, Merry Lawn, Cauldron, Whitestone and Passive in strong work, some of the big winter events should be credited to Palmerston horses this winter. / Passive is undergoing a preparation for the Grand National Hurdles, and Don Carlos is after the G.N. Steeple. The latter horse is in great fettle and is sure to repay watching. Of the others, Defeat and Te Arai are fencing with their usual dash. The Hon. J. D. Ormoml sent four Birkenhead fillies across to the Sydney sales, and, strange to say, they were all bought by New Zealanders. It is rather amusing to read of Mr. E. J. Watt purchasing a Hawke's Bay-bred filly per medium of a Sydney sale. The New Zealand mare Lady Medallist was purchased by J. W. Xoad on behalf of a Queensland sportsman, and is to race in the Northern State during the next few months. She will, however, probably be returned to Noad later on with a view to being prepared for races in Sydney. Lady Medallist was very stale on the concluding day at the A.J.C. meeting, but after a short respite should quickly repay her new owner for his outlay of "a thousand of the best and brightest." On Thursday next the Hawke's Bay Stakes, the last of the season's classic races, will bring together a smart field. With Formby back to form again, his meeting with Madam Madcap, Vice-Ad-miral, Sunburnt, Royal Scotch and others should he worth watching. Twenty-two still remain in the race, but hardly more than seven or eight arc likely starters.
