OIL FROM PHILADELPHIA
OPPOSITION TO THE STANDARD COMPANY. NEW ZEALAND MARKET INVADED. The invasion by the Standard Oil Company of the China market, which was looked upon by the British Imperial Oil Company as their own preserve, provoked retaliatory measures which have culminated in heavy shipments of oils bcinz sent by lmlh companies to the East to sell at cut prices. News is now to hand that the British Imperial Oil Companv will also have a bid for a market in New Zealand. The cargo steamer John HaTdie (4372 tons) left Philadelphia on March 12 with case oils (benzine, motor car spirits, and kerosene), for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin.
The British Imperial Oil Company's oilfields and business ramifications are spread over all quarters of the globe and just as the Standard Companv's trade is paramount in the New World, so the Imperial Company's operations are predominant in the Old World. The Borneo and Sumatra oilfields belomj to the Imperial Company, and thev inabout to open up oilfields in Egvpt in proximity to the Suez Canal. The latter move, in view of the increasing use of oil fuel for steamers, is of great importance to the shipping world. The Wellington trade is greatly interested in the arrival of the John Hanlie. She is expected in two or three weeks' time.
