"KING" RIDDIFORD DEAD
WEALTHIEST MAX IX THE DOMINION*. " By Telegraph.—Press Association. Pfllmerston X., Lust Xigut. Mr. E. J. Riddiford, known throughout the Dominion as "King" Riddiford, and the largest payer of taxes, and especially the graduated tax, in New Zealand, died at i p.m. to-day of heart failure. He had been bad for some time, but rallied recently. A grand-nephew, Basil Forster Pratt, died here at eight this morning of appendicitis after a very brief illness. His death was a shock to Mr. Riuuiiord. Mr. Riddiford'* body will be taken to his old home at the Lower Hutt for the ■funeral.
■ Mr. E. J. Riddiford wag the ftrst child baptised in New Zealand by Bishop Selwyn, and his father, who arrived in Wellington in 1830, brought out with him the first house erected at Pipitea Point. '"King" Riddiford leaves three sona and three daughters He wag easily the wealthiest man in New Zealand, and has large areas intact in this and the Wairarapa districts.
