THE DESTINY OF SAMOA
AUSTRALIAN. OPINIONS. By cable—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, Hay 2. Referring to the cabled Pan-German newspaper comments, Mr. Hughes declared there was no doubt that the destiny of Samoa was of considerable interest to Australia, as it would be clearly a source of danger to the continent of Australia if it were in the possession of a Power strongly hostile to Australian interests, as it might be used as a naval base. Rut Bubject to that he had never heard any suggestion seriously put forward that Australia should annex Samoa.
Missionary circles are surprised at the statement that missionary enterprise in Samoa is strongly anti-German. An absolute denial is given to the statement, also to the assertion that the missionaries have said or written anything in support of the assertion that it is the aspiration of every Englishman to see the group joined to Australia or New Zealand.
