ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
PLAYING WITH POWDER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Thursday. A lad named James Walsh was seriously injured about the eyes when playing with gunpowder. A IDENTIFIED. Thames, Monday. The body recently found in the Thames river has been identified as that of John Thomas Browne, aged 03, a resident of Wailii, who left that town to attend the Auckland races at Easter. On his return he promised to telegraph to his relatives when he arrived at Thames, and as he did not do so it is presumed he fell off the wharf at Thames and that the body was carried by the tide to where it was found.
FATAL COLLISION. Invercargill, Monday. On Saturday night, Arthur W. Mitchell, a shop assistant, while riding a bicycle on the North road, was run down by a taxicab approaching from the rear, sustaining a fractured skull and other injuries, which proved fatal. A PARCEL BOY KILLED. Auckland, Last Night. While in the act of peering down the lift well from the second floor of Smith and Caughey's drapery establishment this afternoon, William Brewer, aged 10, of Grey Lynn, employed as a parcel boy, was struck on the head by a descending lift and killed instantaneously. The entrance to the lift, which was used for the conveyance of parcels, was guarded by only one bar.
A CHILD BURNED. Masterton, Last Night. The eight-year-old daughter of Mrs. E. Jacobsen, of Mauriceville, was severely burned about the body on Saturday through her clothes taking fire. Her injuries are not expected to end seriously, though slie is suffering from shock. A CYCLING FATALITY. Nelson, Last Night. The body of Charles Lamb, a well-, known resident of the city, was found on the beach at Tahnna this afternoon. While cycling along the Rocks road yesterday afternoon, Lamb met with a serious accident. His bicycle skiuded, and he was thrown over the parapet on to the rocks, about nine feet below. First aid was rendered by passers-by, and Lamb seemed to have recovered sufficiently to be left. He was seen walKing about the beacli later in the afternoon but failed to return home, and a search was instituted. It is surmised that Lamb was dazed by the fall and subsequently lost consciousness, being overtaken by the incoming tide. He leaves a widow and three grown-up sons. Lamb was about to leave Nelson, having purchased a business at Wanganui.
MISSING FROM MOTUEKA. Nelson, Last Night. A young man named Felix Fry, a resident of Motueka, has been missing since Friday, and there is reason to fear that he has been drowned in the Motueka river. Search has so far been unavailing. TWO SPORTSMEN DROWNED. Wellington, Last Night. The opening of the shooting season today was marked by a distressing accident on Lake Wairarapa, resulting in the loss of two lives. Details are meagre, but so far as is ascertainable, it appears that a party of four—G. Pepperill, aged sixty, his son, a nephew, and a friend (a man about fifty years of age)—went out in a small boat to shoot ducks. The weight of the four men, together with their guns, ammunition, etc., proved too much for the frail craft, which sank near the mouth of the Tauherenikau river. The elder Pepperill and one other man, whether the nephew or the friend (neither of whose names is available) wa3 not known this evening, were drowned. The only thing certain is that the younger Pepperill is one of those saved. Lawrie Donald, of Featlierston, who was shooting near the spot, went to the rescue on seeing the boat party in difficulties, and saved the two men. G. Pepperill leaves a widow, who is an invalid, and a large family in Featlierston.
