THE " GEORGE " PRESENTATION

APPEAL THROUGH LORD ISLINGTON

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night,

The following has been received from his Excellency the Governor: —"A project has been set on foot, and is meeting with wide acceptance at Home, to ask those of his Majesty's subjects In every part of the British .Empire who bear the Christian name of 'George' to unite in sending a gift to his Majesty on the occasion of the forthcoming Coronation. An executive committee has been formed to carry out the srVme, composed i>t the following:—Lord Curzon, Earl Grey, Lord George Hamilton, Sir George Reid, Earl Stradbroke and Admiral Sir George Warrender. The above committee have already formed an organisation in each county at Home to carry out the work, and have written to mo. as they have to the Governors in

other dominions, asking me to take what, steps T can to bring the project before those in New Zealand who bear the nnme 'George,' and thus afford them an opportunity, should they feel so disposed, of joining in the gift. In order that {is many persons as possible may be able to do so, it is proposed that subscriptions be accepted from a penny up to five pounds. The list of names of donors, but not the amount given by each, will be presented to the King. The proposal has only just come to hand by the mail, leaving but a few weeks before the subscription list closes, on June 1. The .time, therefore, is so limited that it does not permit any arrangement being suggested in the nature of effective organisation throughout the different districts of New Zealand for collecting subscriptions. I am, therefore, compelled to confine myself to makin? public this appeal through the courtesy of the Press to all those who may wish to join this movement, to enable them to send, with name and addTess, their subscription to the "George Fund,' to the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, The fund will close and the results be cabled Home on June 1. Subsequently a list of all donors, with their addresses, in Now Zealand, will be forwarded to his Majesty the King."
