HOME DRINKING DENIED
MAORILAND CLERGYMAN IN SYDNEY. AND THE OPPOSITE VIEW. By cable—Press Association.—-Copyright Sydney, April 28. The Rev. Mr. Fee, a New Zcalander, who is on a holiday visit, interviewed on the no-lieensc movement, said that the statement that home drinking had increased in dry districts was a gratuitous lie. Sly grog-selling seemed to be encouraged by brewers and liquor merchants, who supplied sly grog-sellers and then pointed to the conditions they themselves set up. If it were desired, the trade could stop sly grog-selling by refusing supplies. If the no-license party had not yet killed the trade it was only a matter of a little time until it would meet its doom.
Mr. A. Farthing, Victorian delegate at the inter-State Licensed Victuallers' Conference, declared that the enlightened countries were France, Switzerland and Germany, where licensing legislation had been settled for hundreds of years. The United States had dabbled in no-license for sixty years, and did not now know where she stood, while New Zealand was the laughing stock of the world at Home for freak licensing legislation. Mr. Nix, of New Zealand, in the debate, supported Mr. Farthing's view of New Zealand legislation. He did not think any town had benefited by no license.
