THE COAL VEND CASE
CORRUPTION ALLEGED. By cable—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, April 28. In the Coal Vend prosecution, John Haynes, proprietor of the Newsletter, gave evidence as to the writing and despatching to the Adelaide Advertiser a letter condemning a coal mine in New South Wales, which the South Australian Government contemplated purchasing. He admitted having received £SO for his services.
Mr. Haynes declared that he had heard that certain Federal members would make £20,000 or £30,000 out of the sale of the mine to the South Australian Government.

Upon the resumption of the Coal Vend | case, counsel for the Commonwealth made a statement on behalf of Mr. Hughes in connection with his Adelaide speech. Mr. Hughes claimed that he did not say anything in contempt of court, or anything that could in any way prejudice the defendants. He did not admit that he had made any references to the case otherwise that in his opinion it was justifiable. At the same time, he gave an assurainee that he would not publicly comment on the case till the court had given a dicision upon it. Wheeler, manager of the Newcastle Wallsend mine, who stood out of the Vend, objecting to being bound to sell coal to certain steamship owners, was the only witness. Before the vend was formed the output of his mine was 150,000 tons yearly for inter-State trade. After the formation of the vend his output, "ink to 10,000 tons. This was due to the i owners declining to put his coal I'ofore their customers.
