DISTRICT NEWS

HILLSBOROUGH. On Friday last, despite the rain, a fairly large audience gathered to hear the school children sing, and sing they did, with so much "vim" that they delighted many a heart. A noticeable feature of the concert was the remarkably good expression and clear enunciation of the little ones. Time, too, was excellent. Their teachers, Miss Stephen and Mr, Mills, and Miss Hilda Bishop (the accompanist), are to b? congratulated upon the success of their concert. Following are the items:—Pianoforte solo, Miss Ivy Bishop; action song, "The Postman," children; recitation, "The Frogs," infants; action song, "The Mowers," boys; recitation, "Dolly Dear," infant girls; Tecitation, "Breathing," infant boys; part song, "The Violet," children; dialogue, "Trying to raise the price of butter," senior boys and girls; action song, "The Tea Party," children; recitation, "Bridget O'Flanagan," Ada Hale; action song, "The Polite Little Maids," girls; action song, "Yip-I-Addy-I-ay," boys; scarf drill, girls; chorus, "Peg Away," children; recitation, "A Melting Story," Myra Marsh; chorus, "Farewell," children; burlesque, "Rosabelle's Lovers," children; also songs by Miss Hurrie, of New Plymouth, Miss Olansen, of Denbigh Road, and Mr. Preston, all of which were most enjoyable. At the conclusion of the programme the chairman, Mr. J. It. Hill, proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the teachers for their work with the children. This was carried by acclamation. The prizes awarded for 1910 were then given out by the chairman, who also, on behalf of the settlers, presented Mr. Mills, the assistant teacher; with a silver inkstand, with pen, pencil and paper-knife to match. Mr. Mills, who is leaving to take charge of the Whangamomona school, thanked the settlers for their present.

After a bountiful supper provided by the parents, dancing was indulged iii. Miss Ivy Bishop supplied excellent music, and the M.sC, Messrs. E. Locke and L. Bishop, carried out their duties in their usual efficient style.

The wet weather caused general disappointment, but it is to be hoped that the programme will'be repeated in the near future.
