AN UNEXPLAINED PREFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Pre>s Association. Timaru, Last Night. The Education Board to-day appointed a sub-committee to draw up a memorandum on the unequal treatment of high •schools and district high schools which receive a Government subsidy of £ for £ on voluntary subscriptions, and the primary schools, which get nothing. The case of the Timaru Main School was mentioned, which raised £SOO in one year for teachers' Saturday classes.

COMMITTEES' PROTESTS. Palmerston N., Tuesday. As a pvotest against the treatment of Palmerston by the Wanganui Education Board, no committee was elected. i, At Ashhurst the following resolution was passed:—"That this meeting of householders protest to the Wanganui Education Board against the inadequate amount granted to the committee for carrying out ordinary and necessary works, and that the unpaid accounts for last year be forwarded to the Education Board with a request that they pay the same, and, further, that in the absence of Mr. Bennett, the Palmerston member of the Board, who is on, a trip home, Mr. Guthrie, M.P., he requested to use his best endeavors to secure for the school sufficient funds to carry on with." Under those circumstances no one would accept office on the committee.
