THE BISHOP OF AUCKLAND

A PLEA TOR THE BACKBLOCKS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A \ery large congregation asse-mbled at the Cathedral this evening, when Bishop Crossley was formally enthroned. The Bishop, in the course of his sermon, paid a tribute to the work of his three predecessors in the diocese (Bishops Selwyn, C'owie and Neligan). He made a special reference to the excellent work done by Bishop Selwyn, in spite of many legal hindrances in establishing the constitution of the Church of New Zealand on a satisfactory basis. In referring to the work of this diocese, he said that its linkage with Melanesia could never be deserted, "but," he said, "in its own liackblocks and 'never-never' lands surely some of the noblest toil of your sons is being done, while the Maori people are ever our test of God."

The offertory was in aid of the Huka rere Girls' School.
