Mr. Carroll has received a cablegram. stating that Sir Joseph Ward and party; have arrived in England all well. A Sydney cablegram states that Lord Chelmsford, Governor of New Southi Wales, has sailed for England on sir. months' leave.

A press message stntes that Mr. McGowan, Premier of New South Wales, is touring, in. France and will arrive in London on May 6. Mr. H. P. Buts, manager of the Waverley branch of the Bank of Australasia, has received notice of promotion to the managership of the Gore branch. A London cablegram reports that the Rev. W. R. Inge, Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Cambridge, will' succeed Dr. Gregory as Dean of St. Paul's.

Archdeacon Crossley was yesterday consecrated to the office of Anglican Bishop of Auckland with the usual ceremony, St. Mary's Cathedral being crowded to the doors.

At the annual meeting of householders held in connection with the election of n committee for the Avondale district school on Monday night, Mr. John Bollard, M.P., was for the fiftieth year elected on that body. That this easily constitutes a record for the Dominion goes without saying.—Press Association. Mr. D. J. Hughes, while on his way to Kapuni on Monday night to bold a meeting in furtherance of his candidature for the Harbor Board, had the misfortune to meet with an accident. He had been to New Plymouth to attend * meeting of the Harbor Board, and riding from the train he wbb thrown from his horse. The accident occurred near Te Roti, and was due to his horse shying. Licut.-Colonel Hughes, who will command the New Zealand rifle team at Bisley, left Wanganui yesterday by the express to Wellington to join the Ruapehu, which is leaving on Friday. On Monday night Lieut.-Colonel Hughes wag farewclled by the local garrison officers and he was congratulated on the honor conferred on him and presented with 'a handsome souvenir. Mrs. Hughe* goes Home with her husband.
