STATE BRICKWORKS

SCOPE MAY BE EXTENDED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 24, 8.25 p.m. Sydney, April 24. Mr. Griffiths, Minister of Works, officially started the Government brickworks at Homebush Bay. He said the Government policy was to enable the people to obtain things necessary to their welfare at reasonable rates. If the price of bricks in Sydney were not brought down to within reasonable proportions, then the Government would go further than making bricks for its own use and would undertake to supply the general public at a reasonable price. The Government, he said, had the necessary respect for private enterprise, but when private enterprise peeomes public spoliation, then it is time for the Government to take an interest in the people bespoiled. Preparations are being made to largely extend the plant to produce all the bricks required by the Government. The superintendent of works stated that he would be able to supply bricks at 20s per thousand.
