In the course of a speech Professor Watt, agricultural expert at Sydney University, said that on the growth of wheat to a large extent depended the predominance of the white race, whose staple food it was. As the result of scientific investigation it was perfectly certain that the 2.000,000 acres of wheat area in New South AVales might be increased to 20,000,000 acres, and that better varieties and better farming would increase the average yield. Professor Walt added that Sir William Crookes, in predicting, in his book, "The Wheat Problem," published in 1890, that' all lands in the world capable of growing wheat would be required by 1931 to supply the needs of the white population, had not allowed for the fact that science would make it possilile for Australia to grow wheat on nreas whore the rainf&ll was below 20 inches per annum. j __________ '
