THE COAL VEND CASE
MR. HUGHES' EXPLANATION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 23, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, April 22. Mr. Hughes, in reply to the statement made that he committed contempt of court by referring in his referenda speech to the coal vend, which was now before the court on a charge of combining illegally with steamship companies for the control of trade, says the fact of the vend's existence and operations cannot be suppressed merely because there happens to be a prosecution. He is unaware tbat he has said anything of which evidence has not already been given before the court, and will abstain form saying anything that the court may regard as unfair to the defendants. But as the conductor of the referenda campaign he must allude to this monopoly and give as an instance of its operations that which is already in evidence before the court.
