HUNTING

SUCCESSFUL OPENING OF THE SEASON. The members of the North Taranaki j Hunt Club opened the present season on I Thursday afternoon, holding a meet on i Mr. W. Birdli'ng's property at Wai--1 tara, which, with the adjoining properties, offered favorable country for hunting. The weather was good, and there was a strong muster of members following, as well, as a number of spectators. The full pack of ?.2 hounds was in great fettle, affording evidence of great care on the huntsman's part. The day's sport was very interesting. The horse* fenced beautifully, and there were some fine runs, resulting in kills. Amongst those following were the Master, Mr. A. H. Halcombe, on Flying Scotchman, Peputy-Master 11. Matthews on Rua, Huntsman A. Cliff on St. Myrtle, Messrs C. Matthews on Drudgery, B. 11. Chaney on Starlass, W. H. Boulton on Pompey, L. Birdling on Bob, G. Foreman on Barney, P. Rigg (Hawera-Wanganui Hunt) on Cavalier, Lonergan on Singlet, H. Street on Brownie, W. Cole on Nigger,' Jennings on Laddie, L. Lash, W. Rose on Te Akau, F. Carthew on Caolgardic, H. George on Starfish, P. Sampson on Darkie, Mabin on Fantail, E. Julian on Reynardeau, A. Brown on Kurna, The club members were most hospitably entertained in the afternoon by Mr. and Mrs Birdling at the homestead, where the Waitara' Band discoursed a fine programme, and in the evening by Mrs. Cusack, at the Masonic Hotet 'Mr. Halcombe, the master, on both-occasions returned hearty thanks on behalf of the club .members, who endorsed the thanks with cheers. A general meeting of the Hunt Club was held during the day, when Mr. B. H. Chaney was unanimously elected deputy-master, and several new members were admitted. Mr. Cliff, the huntsman, was also presented with the gold-mounted whip won by the Hunt's hounds at the Palmerston show last November. The next meet will be held at Mr. H. > Street's, Bell Block, on Thursday next. I
