When Mr. Claude caught sight of the runaway train it was a hundred yards away and the express one and a half miles distant. The express was travelling at twenty miles an hour towards the .runaway. Mr. Claude jumped on the Tunaway, applied the Westinghouse brakes, waved a red light to the express, and informed the two passengers of their danger. When the express pulled up it was within two yards of the runaway. Even if the driver of the express had seen the danger earlier ho could not have averted a collision if the other train had not been stopped. The Hoiis. Carroll and Thome George, M.L.C., headed the subscriptions to a fund to recognise Mr. Claude's bravery. It is intended to recommend the Government to do something substantial in that direction.
