GOLF
THE NGAMOTU TOURNAMENT. The golf tournament was continued yesterday in perfect weather. Results were as follows: TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP. FINAL. At noon the final for the championship of Taranaki was played between G. Saunders, of Wanganui, and R. L. D. Kidston, of Wellington. Much interest was taken in the contest, which was followed throughout by a large number of enthusiasts. Saunders obtained the first .hole, .the "Witiora," with a score of five to his opponent's six. "The Swamp'' and "The Saddle" also fell to him, leaving him 3 up. The fourth hole, "The Ridge," was 1 won by Kidston, with four strokes to his opponent's five. He also won "Ally Sloper" with the same score, leaving Saunders still 1 up. . The next three holes, "The Pines," "The Rocks," and "The Coffin," were all halved. The ninth hole Kidston won by four strokes to five, and they were thus all square at the turn. The hole was halved in six. At "The Swamp" Saunders made a fine approach, and holed out in three, his opponent taking four. Saunders was now 1 up. "The Saddle" was halved in five. "The Ridge" fell to Saunders in four, making him 2 up. "Ally Sloper" was halved in five, as was also "The Pines." Saunders was now 2 up and three to play, and matters were very interesting. From the tee Saunders made a fine drive, but Kidston got in the gully, and took four to get on to •the green, with Saunders just outside in two. A magnificent put enabled Kidston to hole out in five—a line recovery. Saunders did not play so well on this green, and could only halve the hole— Dormy two. At "The Coffin" Kidston reached the green in one, whereas Saunders took two. Kidston's chance looked good, but his put went about six: feet beyond the hole, and Saunders almost stymied him. With his third shot Kidston just went round the hole. Saunders was thus enabled to halve the hole in four, and won the championship, two up and one to play. The game was a fine close one, there being little to choose between the players. Kidston. if anything, appeared to have slightly the worse of the luck. BOGEY HANDICAP (18 holes). W. B. Johns, Bell and Cnghill tied for yesterday's putting competition, and the play-off was most exciting, Coghill eventually winning by a narrow margin. Miss Standish won the play-off for Monday's competition, and annexed yesterday's prize with the fine score of 10. At the conclusion of the tournament Mr. E. T. Morshead, as one of the club's vice-presidents, in a short but felicitous speech, said that, in common with all the members, he deeply regretted the absence 'of Mr. Arthur Standish, the president, through ill-health. There was no keener golfer in the club than Mr. Standish, who had been a noticeable figure at all former tournaments. Mr. Morshead thanked the visitors for attending in such large numbers, and suggested that the Tournament Committee could not bo held responsible for the wind and rain they had had. Everything, however, that the committee could do had been done. They had had the pleasure/of witnessing a verv fine finish for the championship, and both winner and runner-up were to be heartily congratulated on their performance. He hoped they would see Mr. Saunders often again on the links, and wished Mr. Kidston better luck next year. Mr. Morshead then called for three hearty cheers for the visitors, coupled with the names of Messrs. G. Saunders and Kidston. Mr. Saunders replied, thanking the Ngamotu Club for the kindness extended to the visitors, who, he could say, had all thoroughly enjoyed their three days' play, and were already beginning to look forward to next year's tournament.
