LIBRARIES' CONFERENCE

The Libraries Conference passed a resolution expressing the desirability ol improved salaries and shorter hours for library assistants, and of co-ordination between public and scmi-publie libraries in the same city. The conference referred to a committee the question of co-operation in book-binding, with a view to the effect of a saving in th« cost, and set up a committee to draw model by-laws for municipal libraries. On a proposal recommending the executive committee to consider the desirability of the appointment of Home agents for the supply of books and periodicals, there was much diversity 01 opinion, but the motion was carried. The subject of converting the Parliamentary Library into a national and municipal library, as fully as practicable open to the general public, as against the present method of exclusiveness to Parliamentarians and their friends was discussed, and a motion was carried recommending the Minister for Education, an ' the Parliamentary Library Committer to institute tin change. Mr. Wilson, Parliamentary Librarian, defended the present method.
