THE EASTER SPORTS
I A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. 1 . | . T'.ie sports attracted a crowd of between two and three thousand to the , Recreation Grounds yesterday. It was quite warm and pleasant there, despite the fact that a rather unpleasant breezee was blowing outside. The running and cycling tracks were in lirst-class order, the fields were large, and the finishes were very elosee, and in most cases exciting. The axemui's events proved most attractive. They were keenly contested, and were intently watched by the spectators. In fact, the success that has followed their inclusion should encourage the committee to eater more for this branch of sport. There was no unpleasantness or serious accident to mar the day's pleasure, though falls were frequent in the cycling events, due to the "•carelessness of the cyclists themselves, and not to any fault of the track. The officials had made complete arrangements and the events were run well up to time,- . there being none of those vexatious delays that so frequently spoil these gatherings. Mr. Jas. McLeod, as secretary, attended to his multifarious duties with an urbanity and a thoroughness that guaranteed the success of the meeting. The secretary has asked us to specially thank the splendid committee that managed the meeting, and particularly the solid little army of workers who prepared the ground and otherwise made the meeting a pleasure to the ofl'icials'as a whole. Valuable assistance was rendered In the society by Mr. Alf. Hansen, of Eltluvm, who controlled the axemen's exents. The judging was unquestioned throughout the day, and the music of the Garrison Band contributed to the enjoyment of the gathering. RUNNING EVENTS. 150 yds. Maiden. —Ryan 1, Parker 2, W. Crockett 3.
