TOWN IMPROVEMENTS
THE GOOD; TEMPLARS' HALL. Our readers have for some time pasi been aware of some extra movement among the Good Templars, and there have been reports of sundry dealings with the Borough Council over the removal of earth. There is the excavation and other work going on at the corner of Courtenay street and Carrington road, about which people are asking, "What is this for ?" The Good Templars have at last commenced building their hall, and, as announced a few days since, have decided to lay the foundation stone on the 27th inst. In the meantime we think some idea of what is to be built will be of public interest. The site is a good one. It is close to the centre of the town, though not on the main street; it is on high ground, and when the building is completed, will be a prominent feature in any view of New Plymouth from Marsland Hill or the West End generally. The Carrington road frontage will be 42ft., with an elevation of 35ft.; the Courtenay street frontage will be nearly 80ft, with an elevation of 16ft. There will be the lodge room in the basement, which will be, 32ft. by 25ft., with the entrance from Carrington road, and also communicating with the large upper hall by means of a stairway. The main hall will be entered from the corner of Courtenay street and Carrington road by a short flight of steps, and inside will be 70ft, long by 38ft. wide and loft, high in the walls. The whole will be finished and lined, throughout with nar-, row vertical red, pine, and the ceiling with similar timber put on, diagonally. The comfort and safety of those using the building is being attended to in accordance with the regulations of the borough council and the Fire Board. Fire exits, drainage • and ventilation arc all provided for. The basement will be in brick, and the main hall in wood. The Good Templars are their owil architects, but they have entrusted the building to Mr. James Salt, who is associated with Mr. G. Back in the brickwork, and Messrs. Nixon and Nixon for the plumbing, gas fitting and electric lighting. 0" the whole from what we can see, the 1.0. G.T. have made a decided forward movement, and we hope that it will answer their expectations; not to make profit for themselves, but to promote: the social and moral welfare of the community.
