Three hundred men are idle at the Portland Cement Company's works, ow» ing to the Sydney wharf laborers refusing to handle bagged cement on the ground that the dust is injurious to health, though the company is providing special paper-lined bags, and offering to increase the pay to eigliteenpcnce an hour. DAIRY EMPLOYERS' UNION. Sydney, April 14. A meeting of representatices from the dairying centres formed a union, the primary object being to combat the claims for higher wages and better work- i ing hours of the Rural Workers' Union when these come become the Arbitration Court. ATTEMPTED DERAILMENT. . Sydney, April 14. A serious attempt was made to derail a train at Broken Hill. A heavy log was placed on the line, but, beyond a severe jolting, no damage was done. PREPARING FOR PENNY POSTAGE. Melbourne, April 14. The postal authorities are preparing for an increased uusiness upon the inauguration of the penny post oil May 1. THE LAW'S LONG ARM. Melbourne; April 14. The police have arrested William Hall, who escaped from custody nine years ago while serving a sentence for burglary. He had been taking refuge in New Zealand, and spent part of the time in gaol. A NOBBY NUGGET. Brisbane, April 14. A 12-pound nugget at Ebagoolah, in North Queensland, yielded £220 woTth of gold.
