FIRES.

BOARDING-HOUSE DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Pahiatua, Wednesday. A two-storey building containing 18 rooms, used as a boarding-house, and known as the Coffee Palace, was destroyed by fire at 2 o'clock this morning. The fire had a good hold when discovered, and the inmates escaped in their night attire. Nothing was saved, and the building was burnt to the ground. The night was perfectly calm, and the brigade was able to save the adjoining houses. The building was owned by Jacob Siemonek, of Masterton, and was occupied by Mrs. Mackay. The insurance on the house was £6OO. in the New Zealand Office, and on the furniture £350 in the same office, of which £SO was held by Mrs. Mackay, and the balance by J. Siemouck. The occupants of the boarding-liouse were heavy losers. PAPER MILLS DESTROYED. Dunedin, Last Night. A fire occurred in the New Zealand Paper Mills Co.'s premises at Woodhaugh this evening, resulting in the total destruction of the building, plant, and stock. The fire had a strong hold when discovered, and the employees had to rush from the building. The origin of the fire is unknown. The building covered about halt' an acre, and the plant was modern and efficient. The building was valued at £OOOO, and the plant from £12,000 to £13,000. On the premises there was manufactured stock valued at £3OOO, raw material £2OOO, and a stock of chemicals and dyes £llOO. Insurances on the building and stock totalled £12,500, distributed over the Standard, National, Commercial Union, Royal, Alliance, South British, and London and Lancashire offices. Over fifty hands will be rendered idle. TEXTILE FACTORY DAMAGED. Dunedin, Last Night. A fire in Bath street to-night ih the premises of Joyce Bros, and the Textile Bng and Sack Co., did much damage. It is supposed that the fire was caused by fluff coming in contact with a cardie. The damage will probably exceed £3500. The property was insured in the Queensland Office, but the amount is unknown. if your property is not insured call at or ring up the United Insurance Company, Ltd., Devon street. Telephone 198.
