THE WINTER SHOW
COMMITTEE MEETING, j A meeting of tlie general committee' of the Taranaki Agricultural Society, and also of the Winter Show commit-1 tee, was held in the secretary's office' j. last night. Mr. W. Ambury (president) | presided over an attendance of about l twenty members. I & ANNUAL MEETING. | J Mr. Wood moved, in accordance with' >• notice of motion, that the annual meet-| ing be held during the last week in * July, or the first week in August, in-j * stead of in April, as at present. He pointed out that the object of this was < to allow of the one committee being ■ appointed to carry through both tke spring and winter shows. If the annual meeting were held in April, a fresh com-j mittee would be appointed to carry tl J winter show work that the preesnt com-: ' mittee had started. This might possibly ' lead to confusion. Last year the diffi-l culty was overcome by the annual meet-!; ing being adjourned, and the officers elected after the winter show. Mr. S. J. Smith seconded. It was pointed out that the commit tee had no power to alter any rule. That had to be done by the members.' It was accordingly resolved that trite] secretary and chairman fix the date of! the annual meeting for some time in April, when last year's procedure could be adopted. _ j It was then pointed out that accord-! ihg.to resolution the balance-sheet had, to be circulated a fortnight before the' annual meeting, This could not be done, to allow of the meeting being held in April. i Eventually it was decided to hold the annual meeting in the last week in July. •SALTED OR FRESH BUTTER. | In connection with the butter exhibits at the show, Mr. D. Cuddie, Dairy Commissioner, stated that in the past veryj little difficulty had been experienced in judging fresh and salted butter in the | same class, as the prize-winning ex-, hibits were always selected from butter which possessed the cleanest or most desirable flavor, irrespective of whether it contained salt or not. LECTURES.The secretary reported that arrangements had been made for Captain Young to give lectures at Okato on April 17 th, and at Rahotu on April 18th. The Opunake branch of the Farmers' Union had been communicated with, so that a lecture might be arranged at Opunake, but| 1 that body, had replied that Mr. Reakesi had agreed to give a lecture at Opunake I in May. The committee decided to invite Mr. Reakcs to 'crhire in Now Ply-j mouth after his Opv.nakc visit. SCHEDULE. ' The schedule committee reported that owing to tlif shortness of time they had i been compelled to issue the schedule before submitting it to the general committee.—Confirmed.
It was resolved to add a class, No.j 44a, onions, six of any other variety, i Mr. Smith stated that the State Farm had had an exhibit at the Hawera winter shW that was a show in itself. He si'W no reason why it should not bej shown here, The secretary said that a n quest liad been forwarded to the 1 Department asking for it. ' Tt was stated that a (rood exhibit of flix. from the leaf to the fibre, would b" exhibited by an Awakino flax-miller.' ~-[t was resolved to open a class for flax, the various millers to be notified and asked to make a display. CLUB ROOM. .■• jr *"* I Mr. Smith stated that lie was of opin-, ion that both the office and club rooms could be improved upon. They were not in keeping with the importance of the society. He moved that a sub-commit- ( tee be set up to confer with the secretary re obtaining other offices. The secretary stated that he would! sooner see the winter show over before' the society went in for further expense. I If the committee attended to the furnishing of the club room it would bei suitable for the present. So far-he Badi not seen any one use it. i The motion was lost. A committee consisting of the presi-! dent, Messrs. Connett, Moore, Wood, and 1 the secretary was appointed to arrange! for the supply of suitable literature at the club room. GENERAL. It was resolved to dispose of the sections on St. Germain's Square at tliuupset prim. j The secretary reported that he had' nude necessary arrangements' for the! use of the Drill Hull and adjoining sections for the winter show. In reply to a request from the Ingle wood Technical School committee, it was decided that the cookery classes should be open to all technical schools in Tarnnaki., ilr. E. Griffiths wrote regretting that he would be unable to take any active part in the winter show, owing to pros-' sure of business. f Mr. H. Goodacrc wrote offering any assistance on the winter show commit-! tea. ~- « Mr. ,T,i3. Sim, secretary to the Taranaki provincial executive of the Fanners' Union, wrote asking if the society had come to any decision re the Dairy Herd Stud Book.—lt was decided to write for further particulars. Mr. 11. Okey, M.P., was appointed re presentative to the conference of agri cultural associations of New Zealand, to be held in Wellington in August. The committee appointed to canvass for special prizes reported satisfactorily The president reported that the committee appointed had not yet revised the members' list with a view to striking off members in arrears. The committee wns given discretionary power re allowing the secretary commission on arrears collected. A committee, consisting of flio president, Messrs. Wood, Moore, Smellic, Connett, and the secretary, was appointed to make arrangements for the sale of the half-ton cheese containing coin of the realm at the winter show. The first prize in the champion butter class has been increased from £3 to £3. the committee having received special prize of £2 for this purpose.
