MERCHANT SERVICE GUILD

WAGES OF SHIPS* OFFICERS. By ToJegraph.—Press Association. ' Wellington, Tuesday. The dispute between the Merchant Service Guild and members of the Shipowners' Federation having vessels registered here came before the Conciliation Council today. The guild asks that masters and officers be paid at the following rates for vessels of 1000 gross tonnage and under: Master £2B per month, chief officer £lB, second officer £l4, third officer £l2; every master and officer to be entitled to leave of absence on full sea pay, the master for a continuous period of twenty-eight days and an officer for fourteen days. The conditions also provide for overtime. It was urged on behalf of the federation that the latter body was unable to agree to one award covering officers and masters. Mr. Pryor stated that owners could not discuss the claims if masters and men were considered conjointly. On the other hand, Captain Watson, for the guild, said they could not deal with officers separately, and added that the Union Company had agreed to meet the guild as far as possible in its claims. No settlement was arrived at, and both parties agreed to refer the dispute to the Arbitration Court.
