A PROFITABLE VENTURE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual meeting of the Wellington Opera House was held to-day. It wag decided, in terms of the directors' recommendations, that a dividend of live per cent, be paid, this, together with seven per cent, paid on 30th September, making a dividend of 12 per cent, for the year. WHAT TIMARU IS DOING. Timaru, Last Night. The steady growth of Timaru is indicated by the fact that 65 applicants for water services have been dealt with in the last two months, and 43 building permits issued, the total estimated cost being £10,550. In a comprehensive review of the financial position of the borough, the Mayor to-night submitted figures to show that he contemplated that further loans, amounting to £50,000, can be added to the present loan debt of £170,000 without increasing the rates. The purposes <~.f the new loans are drainage and roading of a recently annexed area, and the erecting of municipal buildings. When these are erected the present offices will be given up to the fire brigade. The existing loan debt includes the cost of increasing the water storage from five to twenty million gallons. This work is now in hand. During the past year £1568 was spent on the recreation ground. The public library has about 1400 regular borrowers. The premises are already too small, and applications have been made to Mr. Carnegie for assistance in enlarging. Underground drainage work is making good progress, 1198 premises having connected with the completed sections of it. The Council allows up j to £lO in each case, and these payments! ■will absorb £24,100 in the old borough. The next leading work the new Council must consider is the provision of trams, and the Mavor thought a good system could be had for £50,000. WOMEN CHARGED WITH THEFT. ' Dunedin, Last Night. At the Police Court to-day Frances Elizabeth Bell was committed for trial on a charge of stealing goods valued at £49 9s Bd, the property of Mrs. Dreaver; also on a charge of stealing 'goods valued at £26 8s 7d from the D.T.C. Evelyn .Tnne Bell wns "lnr«">rt with stealing a silk stole, valued at 21s, the property of Mrs. Preaver, nri'l with stealing goods 'nlued at £1!) 10s 9d, the property of the D.T.C. She was committed for trial on both charges.
