It is officially stated that the King and Queen will visit Edinburgh from July 17th to the 21st.—Press cable. A Sydney cablegram reports the death of John Timmins, aged 110, at Collarenebri Hospital, after a lingering illness.
Lord Crewe's son was christened in Chapel Koyal, St. James. The King and Lord ltosebery, the baby's grandfather, as sponsors, signed the register. A Washington cable states that Mr. Roosevelt is touring in the West speechmaking. lie announced that he was not aspiring to be a candidate for the presidency, and did not desire public office. Mr. F. G. Bolton, who contested the Wellington North seat at last election, states that he has decided to be a candidate for that electorate at the ensuing elections. Mr. Bolton will stand as » Liberal.
A Greyinouth paper says that Mr, John Hewer has received the appointment of mine manager for the iving Gold Mining Company. Mr. Hewer has a thorough knowledge of the Witherforce and other reefs in that vicinity. • Mr. Donald Fraßer, of ltangitikei, and his son, who are interested in the syndicate which has acquired lands on tka Mokau river, arrived in town on Sat» urday night and left again for Palmerston by the mail train on Monday morning.
-Mr. \\. Swadling has been nominated by the Kaponga . Farmers' Union for election to the New Plymouth Harbor Hoard as representative of the Eltham County and that portion of the Hawera County which comes within the rating area, while Mr. C. A. Wilkinson is standing for the three boroughs Eltham, Stratford and lnglewood.
Mr. A. F. Harding, who was captain of the Anglo-Welsh Rugby football team which toured New Zealand a few years ago, ana who returned to New Zealand to take up his residence here, intends going qn the land, and leaves for the north shortly. Mr. Harding has'for some time past occupied the position ol private secretary to the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. T. M. Wilford). At last night's meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. G. Tisch) resigned his position as the Council's representative on the Advisory Committee of the New Plymouth Technical Co], lege. This step was rendered necessary, he said, owing to the duties pertaining to his position as Mayor occupying so much of his time. The resignation was accepted with much regret, and Cr. H. J. Gilbert was appointed to fill the vacancy.
Mr. Percy G. Morgan, M.A., upon whom the appointment of Director of Geological Survey, in succession to Dr. Bell, has been conferred, has for some years been on the staff of the New Zealand Geological Survey. Mr. Morgan, from July, 1897, to May, 1905, was Director of the School of Mines, Waihi, and for a year prior to 1807 was on the staff of Thames School of Mines. During Dr. Bell's absence in Europe and America in 1907, Mr. Morgan had charge of the Geological Survey in the Dominion. He is Master of Arts of the New Zealand University, a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers and of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. H« holds ccrtrficates ns land and mining surveyor, battery superintendent, and assayer of gold, and has done a great deal of original work in geology for the Mines Department.
