INGLEWOOD CRICKET CLUB

SMOKE CONCERT. On Thursday evening, the function of the year, the banquet to celebrate tht winning of the cricket double by the local teams, eventuated. A large number of cricketers and friends assembled in the dining-room of the Coffee Palace, and full justice was done to the good things provided. Messrs. Whittle, Avery, Gwillim and Perham were present from New Plymouth. '

Mr. W. E. Percival, chairman of the gathering, proposed the loyal toast, followed by the "North Taranaki Cricket Association," coupled with tihe names of Messrs. Perham and Whittle. The Association, he said, was a very active body, and was doing a great deal to foster cricket in the district under its control.

Mr. Whittle, in responding, said that the Association had always done its best and would, he was sure, continue to do so. He was sorry the president or the secretary was unable to be present. He congratulated the Inglewood Club on winning the two championships. Inglewood had always been a stronghold of cricket, and nothing gave hian greater pleasure than to be present that night. Mr. Perham had little to add to Mr. Whittle's remarks. The Association, he remarked, was composed of men who were not afraid to voice their opinion, which was t. very good 'thing. He added his congratulations to the club, who, he said, were true sports, and always would be—win or lose.

Mr. J. E. Avery proposed the toast of the "Inglewood Cricket Club," coupled with the names of Messrs. D. Clegg, captain of the seniors, and J. Sutherland, captain of the juniors. The Inglewood Club, he said, was the best sporting club in the division, and no team regretted losing the championship to them. Messrs. Clegg and Sutherland responded. Mr. Sutherland pointed out that the juniors had been handicapped by having had to travel eight times, while only two other clubs had travelled at all, and then only for one match each. Mr. W. J. Matthews then proposed the toast of the patrons of the club, without whom no club could flourish. Inglewood was particularly fortunate in this respect, as they had many solid friends and staunch supporters, who liked to see them win, but stuck to them during their reverses. The toast was coupled with the names of Messrs. B. H. Nicholls (patron) and W. Ligbtfoot and A. Leslie, the latter two gentlemen having kindly provided trophies for competition during the season. Mr. Pereival then announced that he had the pleasant duty of presenting the trophies. To Mr. G. Pullan went Mr. W. Lightfoot's trophy of a bat for the most improved batsman in the seniors. Tie thought that in a team whose forte was batting the honor was a particularly high one. Mr. Leslie's trophies, pipes for the seniors and a razor for the juniors, to those who made a score of more than 75 in any match were won as follows: Seniors, G. Gudgeon, 78 not out n. Clegg 80 not out, W. J. Matthews' 76; juniors, L. Sutherland 86 not out. Several other toasts were honored, and the singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded the most enjoyable and entertaining evening that it has been the pleasure of the Inglewood people to take part in for some time past. During the evening songs were contributed bv Messrs. Matthews. Farmer. N. Thomson, E. N. E. Moody, T. Nicholls, T Ttaploy, J. Sutherland and W. Ogier, while Mr. ,T. Sutherland officiated piano.
