THE SEASIDE PICNIC

UNFAVORABLE WEATHER. The East End Committee were most unfortunate in the weather for the picnic and promenade concert yesterday to wind up the bathing season. They had gone to considerable trouble and expense in providing a varied programme of interesting novelties for both the afternoon and evening. In the afternoon the weather, was very dull and threatening, and tne attendance was not what had been expected. Nevertheless the committee decided to go on with the programme, and some very enjoyable event* were got off. The obstacle race cause*, a lot of amusement, the antics of the youngsters in negotiating the various obstacles and performing the various; feats set out. evoking much laughter.' The, Rob Roy canoe race was also keenly contested, and the boys paddled'these'frail vessels most skilfully. The harem skirt was the centre of Attraction, and caused much comment, both favorable and otherwise. The committee bud plenty of choice of models, as no less than twenty ladies offered themselves to the committee. The ladies' committee, headed bv Mrs. DockrilJ, had made preparations for catering for a huge crowd, and. needless to sav, felt a little disappointed at the weather. The following were the results of the races:— Pillow fight: S. Court an' E. -Revel], dead heat. 1. Eight entries. American pony: Steele 1, S. Ewing 2. Seven entries. Rob Roy canoe race.—First heat: S. Grayling 1. 11. C. Grayling 2. Second heat: W. Ewing 1, Bellringer 2. The final was unable to be rowed, so the winner of each heat will receive a prize. Obstacle race: W. Ewing 1, Scrivener 2. Eight entries. About 0 p.m. rain fell, and the committee had reluctantly to postpone the evening's programme. About ft hundred people turned up, however, and an im-' promptu concert was held in the bathing shed. The committee will meet with considerable loss over the function, so it is hoped there will he a record attendance when the next picric is held.
