DISTRICT NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondents.) MAKETAWA. The fine weather still continues, though at times it has assumed a threatening aspect. Light, warm, drizzly rain fell during Sunday last and on Tuesday morning, but though suffi-j cient to freshen up the paddocks, it has not interfered with the burning of logs and stumps, which this year is being gone on with on a scale larger than in any previous year. Logs, etc., burn away completely with a minimum 01 labor, and farmers arc not slow to take advantage of the opportunity. For aj good number of years, during April we have been treated to very heavy rain squalls that precluded anything being done in the burning line, and the work done this year through the exceptional weather must result in great benefit when ploughing in the spring is started.] A dance is to be held in the Durham School on Friday evening next, and as' these affairs in the past have proved joyable, there is no doubt that this one will be well patronised. j The grass is looking fresh again, and still has a good growth, and visitors from the other coast assure me that they have never seen such splendid feed as is to be seen around this district. Ooud old Taranaki! | The Jlaketawa factory picnic and sports have been postponed on account of the loss occasioned by Mr. A. Mar-. shall through the death of his eldest son at a New Plymouth private hospital. The picnic, which was to have taken place on the Gth inst. in Mr. Marshall's paddock, will be held on a date to be announced later.

The monthly meeting of the Durham Road School committee was held on Monday last, when a fair amount of business was attended to. The inspector's report was considered, and members expressed pleasure at the satisfactory nature of the remarks. An invitation was received from the Technical Advisory Committee to attend the opening ceremony of the Technical School at Inglewood on Thursday next. Information was also received, and ladies should please note, that a dressmaking- class was being formed at the Technical School under the supervision of iliss Dempsey. The quarterly fee is fixed at 15s. |
