PALMEHSTON NOTES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Tuesday. Practically all the horses engaged at the Manawatu meeting to-morrow ana, Thursday have arrived. The majority] were on the tracks this morning, and a! lot of interesting work was done. Or-| ton and Culprit covered four furlongs in 50sce. on the plough, where all the. work was done. Kilosteri, Rauparaha and San Lass left seven furlongs behind' in lmin. 37see. Vibration and Rangia-I tut', Stakes' candidates, galloped five furlongs, the last four in 5iy 2 sec. Gipsy j Belle mid Aloha got over five furlongs, in lmin, ssec, the former having much the beat of the gallop. Peirene and the I rest of J. Mason's team did useful work,i as also did Sir George Clifford's horses,! Masterpiece especially showing attractive form. Effort traversed six furlongs! in lmin. lO'/osee. A record for the I course was put up yesterday morning by Culprit and Sunburnt, who galloped five furlongs in lmin. 2 3-ssec., Sun-! burnt appearing to have the best of it,' and finishing apparentlv well within herself. * j TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") | The Manawatu Racing Club's autumn' meeting will open at Awapuni to-day,; and judging by the numerous aecep-j tanees received the racing should bo highly interesting. The Easter meetings,' at Ellerslie, Riecarton and Feilding, are but ten days distant, and the running l at Awapuni should give sportsme* «.! "lead" for the big events ahead. The' Longburn Handicap has drawn eleven horses, including "our own" Highdea. 1 The top-weight, Ruaparaha, is well 1 taken care of, but Irish Rifle, on Wanga-j nui form, is not badly treated. Wood-' hey generally rans well at Awapuni,' and her recent efforts have been of a| promising order. Kaurna and The Rover each put up 10!!>. extra for victories last, month, The U'.inganui horse, John, has been going well on the tracks, and Al-I bert Jackson expec!- him to run well. Wavcrley touts have the usual "good word" for Koran, and Lady Mcnschikoffj reads well in with 7st 121b. The issue! looks very open, and a race may be I expected. Last year Mendip won frond Merrie Rose anil North-East, fourteen! runners facing the barrier. i A speedy crowd of sprinters are engaged in the Telegraph Handicap. That) good mare Equitas is quite equal to the! task of carrying 9st 71b in such company, but may not be quite sharpened up yet after her long spell, and would probably be better with a race or two "in." Gladiole could hardly have been' let in lighter after her long utring of successes this season, and her runaway' victory in the Flying at Wanganui is still fresh in most minds. Her track' work at Awapuni has been most attrae-' tive right along. Effort has many good performances to her credit, and "is ac-| counted nicely handicapped. Boaiergcs 1 won the race last year for the Highden stable, but it is doubtful whether Nyland will be forward enough to repeat the victory to-day. Of the light-weights, Birkline, Wimmcra and Lady Moutoa have showed their ability to gallop fast, and taken right through 'he handicap is a very fair one, and the winner well concealed. Great interest centres in the Seve»th Manawatu Stakes, run over six fur-| longs. Last year Polymorphous created some surprise by pulling off vhe evmt' from Penates, Danube and eight others.! To-day's race has drawn the pick of | Greenwood's, Stead's and Clifford's, horses, together with a trio from Press-] er's stable, so quality is well lepre-, sented. ' i The minor events at Awapuni cali for] little comment. Good fields should face! the sturter in each. race. \
Trainer Mason's team arrived at Palmorston North last week, and comprises' Peirenc, Orton, Directoire and Mazurka.! The latter is a smart cut of a filly by Martian —Two Step. 11. Cutts has brought up Big Blast, Masterpiece and Counterfeit lor the Manawatu meeting. The trio are report-! Ed to be in good racing trim. It is stated that the Wangamii horseman, W. Price, will ride Stead Bros.' horses in future. E. Lowe will be up on Clladiole to-day, and C. Emmerson will most likely pilot Teotane in the Longburn Handicap. Lady Menschikoff, Shining S'At and Mallet are engaged in the 'JVilding Cup, and Clemora figures amongst the speedy sprinters in other events.
Gisbonie reports are to the erfoct ttat old Mahutonga is jumping tlie small sticks nicely, and there is every prospect of the veteran standing another pre-) paration. i
Equitas has been entered for the principal handicaps to be decided at the 1 Feilding Easter meeting, and those who are rushing the daughter of Advance fori the Auckland Easter Handicap might be wise in holding off until they see if there is a chuncc of the mare being sent north. Antoinette eontincs to stride, out well I at Ellerslie, and if started in the Easter! Handicap will claim heaps of admirers.! Her usual horseman, C. Brown, will ridei her in her Auckland engagements. 'Frisco, the New Zealand Cup winner of 1007, is engaged again at the Feilding meeting. Fort William and Our Queen arrived in Auckland last week, and have been put into steady work at Ellerslie. The former is looking very robust, and ap-j pears to be all"the 'better for recent, racing. |
Sardonyx is looking the picture of good healtV at present, and promises to pick up a few good hurdle races this season.
Montifonn ran badly at Wanganui,' but is a good horse when well, and may', show up at Awapuni where the company will not be so slick.
Opponents of the ten-shilling tote in New Zealand might be surprised to hear how the small bettor is catered for in
the Argentine. No one is asked to invest a pound there. There is a twodollar (English money 3s Oil) ring, and another ring where emu may invest as small a sum as the equivalent oE l'/ 3 d or ;id. There are no bookmakers in that country.
