MINISTERIAL SPEECH

HON. D. BUDDO AT KAIAPOL By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Hon. D. Buddo addressed his constituents nt Kaiapoi to-night, and was accorded a good reception. He dealt at some length with the legislation of the past session, and referring to land settlement stated that in the past three years 4,015,333 acres were taken up, leaving only 3,019,439 acres of Crown land available, of which 200,000 acres were first-class land. He defended the Government from the accusation of keeping millions of acres of native lands from settlement, and showed that if the present rate of settlement of these lands was maintained it would be only a few years before all would be occupied. He dwelt at some length with the speech delivered by Mr. Massey at Kaiapoi, taking up the general line that the Government's legislation was in the interests of the community generally, whilst the Opposition's policy was one of individualism. The Minister was accorded a hearty vote of thanks unanimously.
