Cambridge bad the better start, and led fur a short distance. Oxford, however, quickly overhauled them, and were leading by two lengths at Hammersmith. Cambridge improved their position between Dove's and Thornyeroft's, where only a length separated the boats. The Oxonians forged ahead again, passing Barne's Head with three lengths to the good, and held the advantage to the finish, winning by two lengths and a half. Time, ISinin 2!)scc, which is a record. Since the year 183!) the meeting of the two Varsity crews has been the classical event of the rowing world. They have met annually since then, with the exception of the years 1f)47-4S, when they did not meet, and the year 1849, when they met twice. Tn all there have been 78 contests, of which Oxford has won 37, and Cambridge 30 (including a dead heat in 1877). Oxford has now won three years in succession. Prior to that Cambridge did likewise. The time for this year's race was a record, the previous best time being in 18!)3, when Oxford won by one length and four feet in 18 mill 47see, and in 1!)00, when Cambridge won by 20 lengths in the same time.
