NEW PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS
ARCHITECTS APPROACH MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Christchurch, Last Xight. A deputation of architects waited on the Hon. Mr. Mackenzie regarding the conditions in the competition for designs of the new Parliament buildings. The deputation asked that the competition conditions of the Institute of British Architects be the base of the Government's conditions, and that an assessor or assessors be appointed. The Minister said the Government dia not intend to consult the British Institute, with which they were not concerned, and would not appoint an assessor till the designs were received. A man was to be brought from outside to make the award, and it was not intended to bring him till the were in. Competitors would have to design the rooms in accordance with the total amount allowed for the building. Allowance would have to be made in the chamber for 150 members. A member of the deputation said thai after inspecting the site it could not be considered oie most desirable. The building would have to be erected ovei a gully, which would add enormously to the expense. The Minister said that no site but the one selected would be considered. He undertook to lay before Cabinet the request for the extension of the time within which designs must be in.
